Faces of Hawaii
PHOTO PORTRAIT COMPETITION 2009

Exhibition & Book Debut
November 6, 2009
at the Wailoa Center, Hilo

In 2009, HI Art Magazine invited the residents of Hawaii to be part of this ongoing project to create a portrait of the time, place and community in which we live. Hawaii photographers of all ages, amateur and professional, contributed images of the faces of the inhabitants of these islands. The end result is a book, Faces of Hawaii Volume II, curated by James Jensen, Deputy Director for Exhibitions and Collections at The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, and an exhibition.

A selection of photo portraits of the faces of our islands, along with the images from the book are on display at the Wailoa Center in Hilo during the month of November, 2009.

The Faces of Hawaii opening reception at the Wailoa Center was a great success, attended by photographers and subjects, family and friends from Kauai, Oahu, Maui and The Big Island. With music by Hilo's own Ben Kaili, gourmet pupus, and 160 portraits to enjoy and stories to read from across our islands, a good time was had by all.

Mahalo to all of you who contributed your time and talents to this year's competition and exhibition. For those who where not able to attend, here is a sampling of the evening's festivities. Hope to see you next year!

Dr. Garon could not attend the reception as he is currently on a medical mission in Burma. The Yamanaka's graciously accepted his award in his absence.

While making his selections for the Faces of Hawaii book, James Jensen noted his surprise at the inclusion of animal faces among the photos. He was particularly moved by two portraits of dogs and decided to honor them each with a 3rd place award.
