In a unique program created on the Big Island, the Honolulu based Hawaii Artist's Cooperative strives to educate and provide new career opportunities in the arts to at-risk youth and adults with disabilities, on site here at a fully equipped ceramics studio in Kurtistown. With a focus on literacy education and self-employment through the arts, participants in the program work together with social workers, professional artists and trained studio assistants to complete pre-designed and market-tested products, contributing to the best of their ability to the finished product. Following through to the marketing and sales of their works, the group shares their creative and financial successes. Several students have already moved on to work independently, producing their own product lines for sale in galleries and retail stores.
