Multifaceted Big Island artist, Michael Shewmaker, is primarily known for his large format photography. In the early seventies he studied metalsmithing at Southern Illinois University and worked as a blacksmith for several years. In his current exhibition of sculpture at idspace, he returns to his roots. Shewmaker says, "This work is the culmination of many years of sculptural studies worked out on a smaller scale in wood." While the current works fabricated in aluminum range up to 16 feet in height, he advises that "These are maquettes for much larger pieces... ideally constructed at heights of thirty five to one hundred fifty feet."
